Reduce shipping costs

Shipping prices have increased over the past year, but shippers can cut those costs through smart planning. Tim Benedict, senior transportation manager at APL Logistics, offers the following tips for reducing shipping costs.

  1. Don't spread your wings. Voting to use international air freight instead of express sea for most hot shipments can leave a bunch of savings on the table. Considering time-determined sea shipping, it usually costs 75% less than air freight and is generally reliable.
  2. Air or sea ship. Even if circumstances require the use of international air freight, sea freight is not excluded. Depending on when your goods are delivered, you may still be able to transport them for part of your journey, and then load them onto an ocean liner to do the rest. As a result, your product has to travel fewer miles and lower freight bills.
  3. Let the transport driver choose your warehouse. Choose your distribution center (DC) for efficient shipping instead of attractive rental rates or tax incentives. If a low-cost location adds too many miles or transfers to your supply chain, a higher shipping bill will offset any location savings.
  4. Use DC bypass. If your company sources globally, but only operates DCs hundreds of miles inland, consider a consolidated separation center near your port of entry with products shipped directly to nearby customers. This will reduce excess shipping costs.
